Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille had her handbag stolen out of her car on Christmas Eve in a smash-and-grab attack.

“The perpetrators broke my car window and grabbed my handbag which was on the floor of the passenger side of my car,” she said in a statement.

She was waiting at a traffic light at the corner of the N2 and Vanguard Drive on Tuesday night.

“Other than the inconvenience of having my money, cellphone and other valuables taken, I was shaken by this criminal act.”

De Lille said she wanted to use the “unfortunate opportunity” to warn motorists to be vigilant while travelling during the festive season.

“Ensure that your valuables are out of sight, always remain aware of your surroundings and keep your doors locked.”
