Kloof Nek speedster goes skate-free

A Cape Town skateboarder filmed hurtling down a steep main road will not be prosecuted, The Star reported on Wednesday.

City traffic spokesperson Merle Lourens told the newspaper that Decio Lourenco would no longer be prosecuted because the video of his stunt, posted on YouTube, could not be used as evidence.

“We can’t prosecute him. We can’t use it as evidence. The video could have been tampered with for all we know.”

Lourenco, 24, was recently filmed skating down the busy Kloof Nek road in Tamboerskloof, setting off the 60km/h camera with a recorded speed of 100km/h.

Lourens said the city would send a traffic fine to the owner of the car used to film his stunt.

Earlier, safety and security mayoral committee member JP Smith said Lourenco would not be given the option of a fine.

However he told The Star on Tuesday the matter was out of his hands and the responsibility of city traffic officials.
