John Barnes will be the guest speaker at the EXPRO Toys for Joy Charity Christmas Lunch at Kelvin Grove, Newlands, on Thursday, October 22.
The Jamaican-born Anfield legend and English Football Hall of Famer played 314 times for Liverpool. He represented England 79 times. Twice in his career, Barnes was voted Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year. He has also won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year.
He will flown in for the luncheon by EXPRO, a Johannesburg-based organization of former professional footballers, who have been working tirelessly for charity around the country for the past decade.
EXPRO presents Toys for Joy Charity Christmas Lunch annually in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.
Guests to the luncheons are required to bring two new toys which preferably will be gift-wrapped and a label attached to indicate age suitability and gender. As it is such fun for kids to unwrap presents, guests are urged to wrap their gifts.
After the luncheons, the entire consignment of gifts are handed over to The Rotary Club in the three centres. The service organisations consisting of business professionals and community leaders will distribute the toys to children’s homes and orphanages in the three regions at their famous Rotary Christmas Lunches.
Over the years, the lunchtime events have proved to be fun-filled afternoons of laughter, reminiscing and good fellowship.
Phillip Powell will be master of ceremonies and comedian Mel Miller who decades now has been eyeing the ‘Godfather of South African Comedy’ title will get proceedings under way.
Apart from their annual toy drive, EXPRO have engaged in various other worthy causes which offer support in sporting communities.
