28 June 2026 – In a historic display of talent and resilience, African football has etched its name in the annals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with 90% of its representatives advancing to the knockout stage (Round of 32).

In a tournament marked by the revamped 48-team format, nine out of the ten representatives from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) blazed a trail, far surpassing their counterparts from Asia, South America and Europe.

The teams that dazzled the world and moved past the group stage include Morocco (world ranked 6), Senegal (18), Egypt (26), Algeria (29), Ivory Coast (30), DR Congo (41), South Africa (54), Cape Verde (64), and Ghana (65). Unfortunately, Tunisia (57) was the sole CAF team to exit the group stage.

This stellar performance is not just a testament to the growing prowess of African nations in football but also marks a significant moment for the continent on the global stage.

The 2026 tournament saw Africa achieve the highest progression percentage among participating confederations, eclipsing South America at 83.33% and UEFA at 81.25%.

Among the sixteen teams eliminated after the group stage were notable outfits like South Korea, Czechia, Qatar, Scotland, and Uruguay, highlighting the unpredictability and competitiveness of this year’s World Cup. Such a dynamic tournament underscores the game’s thrilling nature, as established teams often find themselves outdone by rising stars.

The financial implications of this extraordinary run also resonate: teams exiting the tournament at the group stage are guaranteed a payout of $12.5 million (USD) — R213 million (South African Rand). This package consists of $10 million allocated for participation in the group stage and a $2.5 million qualification fee.

Meanwhile, teams that have advanced to the Round of 32 will receive $11 million for reaching this stage, in addition to the same qualification bonus, bringing the total to approximately R230 million.

As African nations continue to break boundaries and redefine success on the football field, the world watches with bated breath. The vibrant cultures and determination these teams embody add a profound narrative to the beautiful game, fostering hope and camaraderie amongst their supporters.

The future looks bright for African football as it not only competes but continues to excel on the largest stages, proving that unity, skill, and passion can turn dreams into reality.
