Nettl in fine fettle – 3 times

An amateur golfer who stunned the South African golf community when he scored three holes-in-one in May, two of them during the same round, had more reason to celebrate when he was rewarded with new equipment from the company whose golf ball he used.
Mauro Nettl, a 54-year-old restaurateur in the village of St Francis Bay who plays off a 12 handicap, had a May to remember when he scored his first hole-in-one at the St Francis Links golf course. Nettl aced the par-three 14th, holing out with a six iron from 144 metres.
And then three weeks later he aced the par-three seventh using the same six iron and the par-three 17th with a four iron, both during the same round of golf.
He used a Srixon ball, so the company decided to upgrade his clubs. The Sunshine Tour, South Africa’s professional circuit, invited Nettl to play in this week’s Vodacom Origins of Golf presented by Samsung pro-am tournament at St Francis Links, and he was presented with his new clubs and a Tour bag.
“I can’t believe my luck,” said Nettl. “It’s been amazing. I mean, I only started playing golf again last November after giving it up for about 11 years.”
Nettl’s three holes-in-one came on quiet days at the club, so he was largely spared the financial pain of having to buy a round of drinks for everyone in the bar.
“I came in the clubhouse bar but there was only my fourball and the golf estate CEO Jeff Clause there. The bill came to R400. But my insurance company paid out R6 000, so I invited everybody to my restaurant and the guys drank up a storm there.”
Nettle had no further holes-in-one during this week’s tournament, which he was very relieved about.
“I was praying I didn’t get another one during this pro-am tournament, because with all these golfers here it would’ve cost me a fortune in drinks.”
